A little bit about
All of our instructors are Chartered Physiotherapists trained in the APPI method of Pilates. The APPI – The Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute – is a global organisation founded by two Physiotherapists who modified the application of Pilates principles, and is now practiced around the world.
Our Pilates qualification requires that we have a Physiotherapy (or equivalent healthcare profession) degree before we can undertake the training. Then there is a rigorous evaluation and examination process to achieve full certification in APPI Pilates.
Our instructors are all registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and have been chosen specifically for their APPI qualification.
As Physiotherapists, we have expertise in managing a wide range of muscle, joint, orthopaedic, and neurological problems. We also have a shared passion and love for Pilates and are dedicated to providing the highest quality of instruction. We will use our clinical expertise to modify the various Pilates movements to tailor to each individuals’ specific medical requirements. Strict limits to numbers of participants in each class ensure meticulous attention to detail and specialist individual instruction, enhancing the benefits of your session.
We consider this to be the Gold standard of Pilates but most of all it is safe, effective and fun!
Lizzy is the Owner, Lead Physiotherapist and Pilates instructor at North Coast Pilates & Physiotherapy. Here is Lizzy’s personal story of how she came to establish North Coast Pilates & Physiotherapy.
“I first started doing Pilates aged 17 following a VHS video! Very quickly I realised I wasn’t “getting it” so progressed to attending classes.
While I was at university studying Physiotherapy I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, aged 19. I continued to do Pilates and found that it really helped me to mange my energy levels and to cope with some of the abdominal pain I was experiencing. I enjoyed it so much that I completed my final year degree project in Pilates and Exercise for Low back pain.
After graduation I had a severe flare up of Crohn’s (I blame the stress of finals). Following months of medication and specialist liquid diets to rest my bowel without success I had major abdominal surgery to remove the diseased section of bowel. Pilates was key to my recovery from the surgery. Affording me a gradual scaled return to activity and to strengthen up my tummy muscles in a safe and effective way.
I’ve always had a love for Pilates and an interest in it’s benefits, having experienced them for myself and researched them as part of my degree so I decided to train as a Pilates Instructor. After achieving my Pilates qualification in 2007 I began teaching classes as a hobby and using it as an adjunct to physiotherapy treatments.
In 2009 I established North Coast Pilates, initially teaching in Primary School halls and various other locations. I continued to personally reap the benefits of Pilates being fortunate enough to teach during both of my pregnancies. Pilates was vital in keeping me fit and healthy during pregnancy and in my post natal recovery.
With a growing client base, I opened my first studio in 2014 and was able to further invest in equipment and expand. After 17 years working for the NHS (albeit part time in recent years) I was able to leave and step fully into the world of business owner and self employment at the end of March 2017.
I now have two beautiful studios, Physiotherapy treatment rooms and a lovely welcoming atmosphere!
I am lucky to have other superb Physiotherapist Pilates Instructors along with me for the journey and their support & commitment is invaluable in providing a high-quality Pilates experience. We are all committed to developing our Pilates knowledge and constantly completing further training and workshops.
North Coast Pilates has an outstanding reputation for providing Pilates to suit all levels, ages and abilities. With a firm belief that Pilates works and is an an exercise that everyone can enjoy I just love bringing that to my clients.”
When Lizzy isn’t doing Pilates (which isn’t very often!) She’s a busy Mum of two and enjoys baking and walking her Frenchie, Enzo!
Nicole is a Chartered Physiotherapist currently working in the Northern Trust in Neuro outpatients. She is a fully certified APPI Pilates Matwork Instructor and has completed my Reformer Instructor training with vast experience in both.
Her love for pilates began when she completed her APPI level one (Foundation) training in 2017. Soon after she began instructing classes for the wonderful North Coast Pilates & Physiotherapy and has loved every minute.
Her greatest pleasure since starting with Lizzy at NCP has been meeting the clients whose willingness to learn and improve each week is never in doubt. As a result, this drives Icole to continually improve and of course, have some fun along the way.
In 2019 Nicole took a career break and moved to Doha, Qatar. Whilst there she was lucky enough to continue instructing pilates and that’s what she finds so special about it, you can instruct this amazing method anywhere in the world, meeting new friends along the way.
In her spare time Nicole likes to bake, meet up with friends and walk her boxer dog Bailey!
Kelly has been working as a Chartered Physiotherapist for over 10 years and specialises in treating musculoskeletal conditions. She has enjoyed practising Pilates personally for over 10 years also so trained as an APPI Pilates Instructor gaining her full certification in 2019.
Kelly took up her role with North Coast Pilates & Physiotherapy in 2019 and loves working as part of such a dedicated, passionate & fun team. When Kelly is not doing Pilates she spends any free time with her family, going for walks on the beach and taking every opportunity to travel.
Catherine studied in Glasgow and qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2007. She has always had a personal interest and love of Pilates and even did her final year dissertation about Pilates. Catherine’s belief in Pilates works has proved invaluable for her own body and for bringing the best out of clients during their rehabilitation. She currently teaches both matwork and reformer classes and private sessions.
Catherine won a Scholarship to train as a Cancer Rehabilitation Specialist Physiotherapist in 2019 and is now a Fully Certified PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Physio and Next Steps Instructor.
When she’s not doing Pilates she is a busy mum of 3 who keep her on her toes and enjoys the beautiful surroundings of the North Coast at every opportunity.
Shauna is a Chartered Physiotherapist and Fully Certified APPI Pilates Matwork instructor. She has over 13 years experience as a Physiotherapist and specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. She believes in emphasising the importance of moving well and creating a positive movement experience to all her clients.
Shauna began teaching Pilates in 2013 to classes in the community and uses it daily in combination with other therapies to enhance her client’s wellbeing. She fell in love with the APPI method of Pilates and is determined to spread to good news that Pilates works to the wider population!
She was delighted to take up her role at North Coast Pilates & Physiotherapy and share Lizzy’s passionate commitment for developing her knowledge and expertise in Pilates and help enhance their client’s health and quality of life.
Shauna continues to develop her Pilates knowledge and skills and embraces any opportunity to do do. She looks forward to watching her clients develop week in and week out and gets a buzz when hard work and dedication pays off.
When Shauna is not in the studio she is busy in her other role as a full time working mum and having been a North Coast girl all her life, she enjoys coastal walks, and getting out to explore the wonderful coastline we live on.
Ceara studied Physiotherapy at Ulster University, Jordanstown. During her first student placement she met Lizzy (still working in the NHS at the time) and got to help set up and participate in the Pilates rehabilitation classes for NHS patients.. And so the Pilates journey began!
Since then she’s worked in the NHS as a physiotherapist in paediatrics, respiratory, musculoskeletal outpatients and acute stroke. Ceara started her APPI Pilates matwork training in 2018 and gained her Full APPI Certification in 2019. She also completed her full APPI reformer training in 2020.
When she’s not doing Pilates she enjoys running, holidaying and touring the North Coast beaches (and food stops)!
Siofra qualified as a physiotherapist in 2018. Her love for Pilates first started on placement as an undergrad physiotherapist when she got to experience Pilates as a recovery method for back pain sufferers (and she was inspired by our very own mermaid Shauna!)
Siofra believes Pilates and Physiotherapy go hand in hand, as physios we’re trained to approach every patient holistically and Pilates achieves exactly the same and have a giggle along the way!
When she’s not working she’s usually found with a Camogie stick in hand or finding endless excuses to try every brunch location on the North Coast!
Professional knowledgeable service
I have been doing one to one classes with Lizzy at North Coast Pilates since November and nine months later I can't believe the difference. I have had back pain for years and have had two operations over the last six years and been told I will need a third (spinal fusion). I have to admit it scared the life out of me the thought of trying it for fear of pain. Lizzy has been brilliant building up a tailored workout month by month and in the process building up confidence to be able to try and do thing that I though would have been impossible. I am not totally pain free but its a massive difference and if I'm having a bit of bad day instead of popping painkillers and laying down for the day, I'm doing Pilates to free things up and being able to get up and on with things. You couldn't ask for a more friend and professional service from someone so knowledgeable in Pilates, and its such peace of mind knowing they are all physiotherapists. Would recommend to anyone with back problems.
First class mat and reformer studios run in such a caring and professional way by Lizzy and her helpers who are all fully trained and qualified in physiotherapy and APPI Pilates. Her classes are fun to attend and I have greatly benefited from them both before and after a hip replacement. My core muscles were strengthened which aided and shortened my recovery. I continue to go to reformer classes to help retain my mobility, strength and general wellbeing.
NCP are a wonderful example of a truly caring and totally professional business.
Onto a winner
I sought out Lizzy 3 years ago, following years of back issues. Back then my pain levels were debilitating, significantly impacting my daily life. I’d attended many Physio and Chiropractor clinics with limited results. Since contacting NCP I’ve attended physio, acupuncture, matwork, mum & baby pilates & now have the strength to attend the reformer classes. I’ve went from walking with a stick & having to sit down frequently when walking, to being able to push my toddler in his pram for over an hour with no pain at all. I know this is down to the professional treatment, guidance, encouragement & support of Lizzy, before, during & after my pregnancy. Add to this her friendly demeanour, good chat, bright, spacious & modern studios & you’re on to a winner. If you have any type of mobility issues or pain impacting you then I cannot recommend NCP enough. The physio will treat your ailment & the pilates will help reduce your chances of reoccurring injuries, providing tools to manage flare ups.
Fantastic, professional, approachable
What can I say, fantastic, professional, approachable, fun, knowledgeable, I could go on.
The level of dedication Lizzy & her team of physio only instructors offer in such a warm, friendly, state of the art environment is unrivalled in the area.
No one can offer such a high level of expertise mixed with such warm personalities.
The simple fact that Lizzy is the instructor to teachers says it all!!
Not only is she the expert, but she is one of the few to offer such a lovely environment for her classes, not to mention the fact she is the only one to offer Reformer classes.
Absolutely 5 stars all round for Lizzy & all her instructors.
Cannot recommend enough
I have been attending Lizzy’s mat work classes for about 2 and 1/2 years and her reformer classes for just over a year. Prior to starting Pilates, I had severe back pain 3 to 4 times per year and my back would ‘go out’ leaving me hobbling for 4-5 days each time. Pain relief medication didn’t touch the pain and I attended a physio who recommended Pilates to increase my core strength. It was the best advice I’ve ever been given. I am pleased to say that I have not had any further episodes of back pain for 2 years and 2 months! I cannot recommend Lizzy and her colleagues highly enough. I will be attending Pilates for life. Anyone with any back issues should definitely give it a try it’s life changing!
